National Geographic 2017 Travel Photographer of the Year contest happened in the mid this year, and the winning photographs were all sorts of alluring. The annual competition highlighted how diverse the planet Earth is, and the winning shots were awarded.
The judges for the competition had to review more than 15,000 entries from travellers around the globe for awards specifically in three categories: Nature, People and Cities.
The grand prize was grabbed by Sergio Tapiro Velasco of Mexico for his captivating image of a lightning strike, shooting from a volcano's ash cloud. Velasco's picture also won the first prize in the nature category.
Norbert Fritz of Hungary took the top prize in the Cities category for his photo, titled "Levels of Reading," and F. Dilek Uyar of Turkey won the People category with his image "Worship." Let's now look at the photos.
