9 Genius Hacks To Help You Prepare For A Hurricane

Natural disasters are, in a word, scary. There is really not much we can do about them except get out of their way, or to prepare as best we can to withstand the event.

Earthquakes, mudslides, avalanches, and tsunamis are a few examples of largely unpredictable events that give residents very little time to prepare. You just have to know how to react to these natural disasters if you live in an area that is likely to be affected by one.

However, we can brace ourselves a little better for things like hurricanes, tornadoes, and other weather-related events.

These nine hurricane hacks can help you withstand severe storms if the power goes out or if you are stranded at home in the aftermath.

It’s scary to think of these things, but it’s incredibly necessary, especially if you are responsible for the safety of others in your household.

If you’re looking for ways to help the victims of the recent hurricanes, consider donating to the Red Cross, or take a look at these nine ways you can lend a hand

First Things First
If you’re being asked to evacuate, DO IT! There is no point in putting yourself or your family at risk if you don’t have to. If you are able to evacuate a danger zone, especially if you have children or elderly folks in your party, get out as soon as the evacuation notice is posted.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the hacks.

1. Store Valuables In The Dishwasher
Your dishwasher is built to keep water in, so it will also keep water out in case of flooding. Store your most precious valuables like photo albums or legal documents in there to keep them dry. Dishwashers are also bolted to the cabinets, so they are more likely to stay put.

2. Think 'Picnic,' Not 'Emergency
When shopping for food reserves, many people flock to snack packs, crackers, and canned food. However, there are plenty of meals that you can prepare and store without electricity. Many fruits and vegetables don’t require refrigeration, like tomatoes, onions, and apples, to name a few of the many. There are also many items that you do not have to refrigerate before opening, like mayonnaise and mustard.

Thinking outside the box can get you things like tuna sandwiches, as long as you grab a new jar of mayo and sealed canned tuna. Also, if you keep meat in your freezer, you can cook it not long after the power goes out if you have a portable grill.

3. Freeze Water In Gallon Bags
If your grocery store is sold out of water and you don’t have a proper storage container (or bath tubs, which should also be filled in these scenarios), you can fill up gallon-sized plastic bags with water and put them in the freezer. This way, if the power goes out, your freezer will stay cold for longer and you’ll have some drinking water saved up.

4. Take A Note From The Military
Military supply stores are chock-full of useful items, like crank radios and water purifiers. If you have one near you, make a stop there in addition to the supermarket.

5. Turn To Disposable Plates And Cups
Do not waste your precious water supply cleaning dishes! You want to be environmentally friendly, yes, but paper will decompose over time, and a few won’t hurt if it’s for your well-being.

6. Think Beyond The Supermarket
If your local supermarkets are sold out of everything, think outside the box. Home-improvement stores, office supply stores, and electronic stores still sell items like water, batteries, flashlights, and other things you may need during and after the storm.

7. Fill Trash Bags With Water
If there are no sandbags available, fill some trash bags with water and they will serve the same purpose. If you have sand or small pebbles around, that should do the trash bag trick, too.

8. Use Paint Cans To Elevate Furniture
If you are expecting to get some water flooding into your home, use paint cans to elevate your furniture off the ground. Hopefully the water level won’t rise higher than that height.

It goes without saying that your most prized and precious items should be moved from the basement and first floor of your home if you are expecting flooding! If you live in a one-level home, place these items higher up.

9. Turn Your Washing Machine Into A Cooler
Your washer can be made into a cooler if you fill it with ice. While this one is filled with beer, you can put other perishable items in here as well.
