Most women are well-versed in different methods of family planning, and lots of people know that the IUD (intra-uterine device) is one of the most effective forms of birth control around.
Doctors say that the IUD method is more than 99 percent effective, but that’s not the same as 100 percent.
Mom Lucy Hellein recently discovered exactly what it’s like to be the 1 in 100 that actually does get pregnant due to a failed IUD.
Lucy got the device inserted after her first child, a daughter, was born. Many moms choose to get the IUD right after delivering a baby so that they can space their kids out. However, just a few months after getting her device, Lucy went to the doctor and got some unexpected news.
She was 18 weeks pregnant!
Unlike other surprise pregnancy stories, Lucy thought she had taken every precaution against conceiving again so soon after her first baby.
Still, she welcomed the unexpected blessing with joy and an incredible, failed-IUD-themed birth announcement.

Mirena is a brand of hormonal IUD.
Once Lucy posted the photo on Facebook, it took off like wildfire, building up 17,000 likes.
She actually ended up taking the photo down, because lots of people seemed confused by the picture.
Many seemed to believe that her baby boy was actually born clutching the small T-shaped IUD in his hand!
While Dexter did not come out of the womb holding the IUD, the real story is almost as surprising!
Lucy got the IUD in August of last year, after having her first child, a daughter.
It’s extremely easy to get pregnant again immediately after giving birth, so many new moms choose to have an IUD inserted so that they get a break from being pregnant, and can space out their children.
There are a few different versions of the IUD, but they all work in basically the same way.
They are inserted into the cervix, and then they either thicken or thin the lining of the uterus, so that an egg can’t implant and start growing.
This method of birth control is considered more than 99 percent effective, but Lucy just happened to win the lottery.
Just months after getting the IUD inserted, she went to the doctor and discovered she was pregnant.
In fact, she was 18 weeks along, meaning she conceived just days after getting the IUD!
Her medical team couldn’t find the device on an ultrasound, so they assumed it had been placed incorrectly, and had simply fallen out and been flushed away.
When Lucy was ready to deliver, she opted for a planned C-section, since her daughter had been an emergency C-section.
Her doctor delivered little Dexter. Then, hiding under the placenta, he discovered the missing IUD!
For Dexter’s very first photo, they staged him clutching the little device. Some babies are just determined to be born!
