The internet is freaking out today over the news that Jason Momoa has shaved off his iconic beard, all in the name of environmental awareness.
According to CNN, the Game of Thrones and Aquaman star took to YouTube to share a short video with his friends, capturing the moment his facial hair met its demise. The video was appropriately titled "Goodbye Drogo… I SHAVED!"
The bearded look has been Momoa’s staple for the past seven years, with his most iconic characters, Dothraki leader and legendary warrior Khal Drogo included, all being known for it. But, losing his iconic facial hair was for the good of the planet, as Momoa explains in the video.
Game of Thrones fans are currently faced with having to say goodbye to their favorite characters as the show's eighth and final season has begun to air on HBO. Seeing Drogo’s beard meet an untimely end was just too much for some and has sent the internet into a frenzy.
Twitter went into meltdown on Thursday as Jason Momoa trended, and fans flocked to pay tribute to the beard they all knew and loved. The widespread response was something Momoa no doubt expected when choosing to use the publicity to raise awareness for a cause close to his heart, although we doubt anyone anticipated just how crazy it would be.
“Goodbye DROGO, AQUAMAN, DECLAN, BABA! I'm shaving this beast off, it's time to make a change. A change for the better...for my kids, for your kids, the world.” Momoa states in the caption to his video, which at the time of writing has over 848,000 views.
In the video, Momoa can be seen bravely taking an electric razor to his face and shaving off his beard, all the while talking about making changes for the good of the environment. As he explains, his aim is to draw attention to environmental issues and discuss a new line of canned water appears to be helping to launch.
The water, reportedly produced in partnership with the Ball Corporation, uses aluminum cans, rather than plastic. As Momoa explains, aluminum is infinitely and 100% recyclable, making it a much more environmentally conscious choice than plastic bottles.
Momoa’s transformation is a drastic one, to say the least, and the headlines are filled not just with the news, but also with his cause. This is definitely a case of using celebrity status wisely.
